Black Bean Burgers

If you’re looking for a tasty, satisfying meal that’s completely plant-based, this black bean burger recipe is a winner. These burgers are packed with protein from black beans and have a great texture thanks to Basmati rice. Chopped onions, garlic, and bell peppers add a fresh crunch, while smoked paprika, cumin, and black pepper give just the right amount of savory flavor. A splash of soy sauce or vegan Worcestershire brings everything together.

These patties make perfect vegan or veggie burgers, whether you’re cooking a quick weeknight dinner or firing up the grill on the weekend. They hold together beautifully and get crisp and golden on the outside while staying tender inside. Serve them on a bun with lettuce, tomato, onion, and your favorite sauce—garlic aioli or a little spicy mustard works great. Simple, flavorful, and easy to customize.

Cooking Time

10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Madame Sarah Black Beans, cooked
  • 1 cup Madame Sarah Basmati Rice, cooked
  • ½ cup finely chopped onion (or scallions)
  • 2–3 cloves garlic, minced
  • ½ cup grated carrot or finely chopped bell pepper
  • ½ tsp smoked paprika
  • ½ tsp cumin
  • ½ tsp salt (or to taste)
  • ¼ tsp Madame Sarah Black Pepper
  • 1–2 Tbsp soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce (use vegan
    version if needed)
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs or oat flour for vegan and gluten-free
    versions
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil or neutral oil (for cooking)

Directions

1. Mash the Beans

In a large bowl, mash black beans with a fork or potato
masher until mostly smooth, leaving a few chunks for texture.

2. Add Ingredients

Add cooked rice, onion, garlic, optional veggies, spices,
soy sauce, and breadcrumbs. Mix well. The mixture should hold together when pressed. If it's too wet, add a little more breadcrumbs. Too dry? Add a spoon of water or a touch of oil.

3. Form Patties

Divide and form into 6 or so firm patties. Press tightly to
help them hold shape.

4. Cook

Heat oil in a nonstick pan over medium heat. Cook patties
for 4–5 minutes per side, until golden brown and crisp on the outside.

5. Serve

Serve on buns with lettuce, tomato, onion, and your favorite
condiments (try a garlic aioli or a little spicy mustard).

Variations

•  Add chopped cilantro or parsley for freshness.

•  Mix in corn kernels or chopped jalapeños for flavor and texture.

•  Use leftover epis (Haitian seasoning) instead of garlic and onion for a Caribbean twist.
